A Kitchen Plan: Part 1

OH BOY, do we love a good plan!

To say that we like to plan here at Hello Good Design might be an understatement, it's ingrained in our DNA. The first room in the house that has the most to change is the kitchen. Holy guacamole – did we mention that this place was vacant for a little bit? On a positive note the original solid wood cabinets were not in bad shape, just a little stinky and sticky…but the sink and the counter top had to GO. Of course, like any designer, we had to devise an initial design concept to make sure we were headed down the right path. And so, we did. Like we have mentioned before we move at the speed of cash, and first things first, we broke items down into the phases of what HAD to be done in order to use this kitchen every day.

Phase 1 of 4: Immediate List of Urgent Changes

A visual...the before.

A visual...the before.

  • Appliances

  • No Dishwasher – that's a problem

  • New Counter

  • New Sink

  • Paint ENTIRE CABINET

Phase one is complete, albeit a couple plumbing details, but we have more counter space, a dish washer, and we feel comfortable that the cabinets are practically new now and good to use. With all that said, here are the details of the kitchen so far.

Counter Depth Fridge, Dishwasher, Convect Oven, and Over Range Microwave:

We chose all Whirlpool appliances and we so far love them, and totally recommend the appliances above. The convection oven is a game changer and the counter-depth fridge gives us so much space in the kitchen.

Counter, Tung Oil, Sink, and Faucet:

Keep in mind - tung oil is one of the only food safe ways to treat your butcher block. WE love the look of the butcher block in our kitchen, it's a little more up keep than the solid surface in our previous home. Side note, we live in the country so anything available on Amazon with free shipping is a great plus, that way we don't have to go to the big city!

Cabinet Hinges and Door Pulls:

Old cabinets called for replacing hinges like for like...which is what you see above. As for the door pulls time for an upgrade. These pulls are AMAZING - value, look, and feel. Seriously - they are heavy! Highly recommend those pulls.

Here is where we are currently at with the space:

Don't you love that make-shift island...we make do. SMH :)

Don’t worry – there is more to come here! Next up Phase 2, which means more cosmetic changes
